Lazareth

Set in a near-future world devastated by a deadly pandemic, the film follows Lee, who becomes the guardian of her orphaned nieces, Imogen and Maeve. She raises them in total isolation in a remote woodland cabin, enforcing strict survival rules designed to keep them safe from what she describes as a dangerous, infected world.

For more than a decade, the girls grow up cut off from society, relying entirely on Lee as their only source of knowledge and truth. She teaches them that any contact with outsiders could be fatal, shaping their worldview through fear and control.

As they grow older, curiosity and doubt begin to surface, especially in Imogen, who starts questioning the limitations imposed on them.

Everything changes when the sisters discover an injured young man in the woods and secretly bring him back to their shelter. His presence disrupts the closed system Lee has built, introducing new perspectives and challenging the rules that governed their lives.

Lee becomes increasingly suspicious and authoritarian, convinced the stranger is a threat. Meanwhile, the girls’ trust in her begins to crumble, and they are forced to confront the possibility that the truth about the outside world, and about Lee herself, may not be what they were led to believe.

Il film è ambientato in un futuro vicino segnato da una pandemia devastante che ha reso il mondo esterno violento e imprevedibile. Dopo la morte dei genitori, Lee si prende cura delle sue nipoti, Imogen e Maeve, portandole a vivere in una casa isolata nel bosco. Qui costruisce una sorta di rifugio chiamato “Lazareth”, basato su regole rigidissime: non uscire, non fidarsi di nessuno, evitare ogni contatto con l’esterno.

Per oltre dieci anni, le ragazze crescono completamente isolate, con Lee come unica guida e fonte di verità sul mondo. Lei le convince che fuori ci sia solo pericolo: infezioni, violenza e morte. Questo crea un equilibrio fragile, fondato più sulla paura che sulla realtà.

Con il tempo, però, emergono crepe: soprattutto Imogen inizia a essere curiosa e a desiderare qualcosa di diverso dalla vita confinata che le è stata imposta.

La situazione cambia radicalmente quando le due ragazze trovano nel bosco un giovane ferito. Decidono di aiutarlo e lo portano nel rifugio, mettendo in discussione le regole assolute di Lee. L’arrivo dello sconosciuto rompe l’equilibrio familiare: emergono dubbi, tensioni e sospetti.
